“To be honest, I never expected to win Paris-Nice. Until this year, I never thought it was possible. But here we are. It could not have gone any better today and the whole week. It’s really not sunk in yet.

I could barely sleep last night. I was so nervous. I felt pressure for the first time in my life. To ride with such a champion as Remco was a very special moment, almost in front of my house actually.

It was a complicated situation this morning, so many scenarios could happen. To be honest, I just had to expect the unexpected and be ready for anything. I knew this course from my heart and I could tell you any single corner, the key points in front of all the splits and all the crashes. I want to thank all the guys in the team and my team for giving me the opportunity to lead a World Tour race in my first year. It’s very special.

Now I’m not going to get ahead of myself. It’s already a great achievement in my life. I will now try to enjoy it and keep my feet on the ground.”
