Berre l'Étang spans an area of 43.6 km². The town is bordered by the Étang de Berre and traversed by the Arc River, both of which have profoundly influenced its history, development and landscape. It is well connected, near the motorway and major urban centres such as Aix-en-Provence, Salon-de-Provence and Marseille, as well as Marseille Provence International Airport and a high-speed rail station.
This industrial and agricultural town is undergoing a transformation that the local authorities aim to turn into an opportunity for the well-being of its 14,000 inhabitants or so. Berre has an economic fabric comprising nearly 600 businesses and over 5,000 jobs, spread across a large petrochemical site, a business estate, several secondary economic zones and around 150 retailers and craftsmen renowned for their skills. It is also home to roughly a hundred farms, representing 42% of operations in the agricultural plain of the Lower Arc Valley.
As a land of excellence blessed with an exceptional microclimate, Berre has successfully preserved its agricultural terrain. The climate conditions enable farmers to undertake early crops, particularly in market gardening. Berre-l'Étang, a destination with a lot going on for it, enjoys the advantages of modern life without sacrificing the charm of a Provençal town that remains deeply connected to its traditions and people.
